AN OPEN LETTER TO THE IYALAJE OODUA OF NIGERIA
I watched the BBC News Yoruba recently and as I listened to Princess Oloruntoyin, I did some research on her name immediately to acquaint myself more with this important personality in Yoruba land, more because she is a female and you don’t see women being celebrated in such manner every day. I believe a wind of fresh air has blown from Yoruba land across Nigeria, especially through Nigerian financial institutions. In my perspective, a woman who was nicknamed “Iyalaje” from a young age must be God-sent, there must be attributes the elders in her family and community saw in her, to give her such a mighty name at a young age. She reminds me of my younger self being called Doctor from childhood, in situations like this some say there is power in the tongue, others say it is destiny but we cannot remove the fact that God instills the right traits in us, makes people see the characteristics of who we might become in future from a young age as He protects us from situations which might hinder us from getting there and prepares us holistically for it. Congratulations Dr. Toyin Kolade, on your coronation, Eku Oriire, Oye A Mori.
I am writing this letter as a daughter of Yoruba descent to a Mother of Yorubaland, with facts being untainted, you are now seen in the public eye as a traditional female leader in our financial institutions which includes our trade centers. I implore your highness, in your regal capacity to create physical and virtual structures, work hand in hand with leaders of market spaces across Nigeria, buttressed by regular meetings and outings for Nigerians to have better financial institutions and market strata. Those with low socio-economic status which happen to be the majority unfortunately, as I write to you find it hard to purchase goods and services, the masses are not smiling because of the situation of our economy. I know you are not the president nor are you in his cabinet but from your interview with BBC, I deduced that you are a true mother and a woman of virtue, who can reduce the burdens in our financial institutions.
There is a bad trend that is going on in our market spaces which is almost becoming an “anko”, because of mismanagement and our polices. Markets in Nigeria now take turns to engulf goods and services with fire, most times with unknown cause, and you can imagine the implication on the traders, mentally, financially among others, I believe with you taking the lead as Iyalaje, it is a new era for Nigerian traders. I am optimistic no one can do this more easily and better than an Iyalaje Oodua with your personality, because you understand our business institutions at all levels better due to the vast knowledge and experiences you’ve acquired over the years coupled with your great expertise in the market arena.
In one of the books I read recently titled “My Story” by Al Maktoum Mohammed, the ruler of United Arab Emirates, a leader every good leader on the globe is trying to emulate, he stated his father’s words, Rasheed Al Maktoum I quote “ The real capital of every economy is in the reputation of the country with its merchants”, I believe you have the power and authority to do this and more.
Thankyou your highness for all you have done for our great nation so far, we know you can do more and we are eager to see your great strides in our financial institutions. The Crown is yours, God bless your Highness, God bless our Financial institutions and God bless Nigeria.
Dr. Fajembola Temilade Azeezat
Princess,Iloka Ruling House, Ikole Ekiti, EgbeOba Kingdom and Environs.
